Design For Your Space: Water Features with Impact

When landscaping or deciding what type of water features to add to your yard or patio, it's essential to design for space. Being strategic and making the most out of your available space can enhance your outdoor areas. Adding too many plants and water features makes your area feel smaller. These are some attractive DIY water features you can build in a weekend using smartpond products.

Tiered fountains

When you have a smaller space, consider building up rather than out. A tiered fountain stacks your favorite water basins or water-tight planters on top of each other. The pump fills the basin at the very top until it overflows into the other basins beneath it.

When building a tiered fountain, the height will determine what strength fountain pump you'll need. In a tiered fountain, the basin or planter at the base houses the pump and the water reservoir. The pump takes water from the bottom and pumps it to the top of the fountain.

Spitter Fountain

A spitter fountain is a unique type of water feature that features your favorite spitter. Creating a spitter fountain requires a little bit of room. The spitter will need to be placed higher up than the planter or water basin that will house the fountain and contain the water reservoir. Side tables, shelves, stools, and other things are great for putting the spitter on, and then you can put your favorite basin or planter underneath.

Flower pot fountains

If you don't have a lot of space or just want to create a more colorful water feature, you can add your favorite flowers to your fountain. The secret to a water feature and planter project is having a planter within a planter. The smaller planter will need to be sealed and big enough to house the pump and fountain. You can then surround this planter with your favorite flowers so you have both a fountain and a flower pot.

Container Fountain

The Container Fountain Kit lets you take any water-holding basin, planter, or other container and turn it into a beautiful fountain in a few minutes. You get to decide how big of a container to use based on your decor style and space. Consider whether you want this fountain to be a main focal point with a stand-out statement planter or a relaxing accent to neatly tuck away in a corner.

Above Ground Ponds

If you dream of having a beautiful pond but have limited space or are renting and can't dig into the ground to create a permanent fountain, an above-ground pond may be the answer. Above-ground ponds are DIY ponds you can build using wall pavers and a liner. You build the pond on a flat surface, as high and wide as you want, and then add a liner so it can hold water.

You can get as creative as you want with an above-ground pond, depending on the space you have.

Disappearing Water Feature

If you want to get adventurous and create a statement water fountain that demands to be noticed, a disappearing water feature is a great choice. What's cool about these water features is that the inner workings, like the pump and water basin, are hidden underground beneath the water feature.

The water seems to flow into the water feature by magic and then disappear. When building this water feature, you'll need to dig into the ground. Typically, these water features are larger than other fountains, like container fountains.

Strategize which water features will make the most impact and where you want your focal points to be.
