How to Build a Pond Maintenance Kit
Water quality issues can sneak up on you, especially in the warm summer months. One day, your pond looks nice and clear; the next day, it's cloudy or, even worse, green. Get a start on pond season this year, and put together this basic Pond Maintenance Kit!
What to Include in Your Pond Maintenance Kit
Gloves - Keep your hands clean and put on gloves before taking on any pond maintenance. This will also protect your hands from any water treatments.
- Rubber Gloves for equipment maintenance, pond cleaning, and general work in your pond
- Garden Gloves for maintaining the space around your pond
Bucket: For mixing water treatments or when you need to clean your pond pump, filter pads, or other pond components. Use the bucket to scoop out water, then mix your water treatments, or gently scrub or wipe off what you're cleaning. A 5-gallon bucket from Lowe's is our go-to.
Scrub brush: Dedicate a scrub brush or two for pond maintenance. Do not use soap or any cleaners on it. When cleaning your pond equipment, only use pond water.
- Soft-bristle brush small enough to fit inside your pump
- Larger brush for cleaning the outside of equipment or around your pond
Fish Net: Regularly scoop out larger debris from the surface of your pond to prevent your pump from clogging. Fish nets are also helpful if you need to relocate your fish temporarily so you can gently remove them from the pond.
Water treatments: It's helpful to have a stash of water treatments on hand at the beginning of pond season. Our essentials are Water Clarifier, Sludge Remover, Barley Pond Clarifier, and Chlorine Remover, so you're ready to prevent and treat any water quality issues.
