Choose the right pump
Choosing the right pump is essential. A pump that is too strong will create a turbulent flow, while a weak pump won’t give the full waterfall effect. Be sure to check the pump’s specification for the ideal pumping height at the head, or top, of your waterfall.
TIP: Excessive bending or in-line filters will reduce the flow. Smaller tubing equals more pressure at the head, increasing flow.
The rule of thumb is for every 1 in. of spillway width, you need:
100 gallons per hour flow (at the head!) to achieve a “sheet” look.
Divide by two for a “trickle” look.
Multiply by two for a “Niagara” look.
For example, our 8 in. Spillway requires the following flows at the head:
8 in. x 100 = 800 GPH (sheet)
800/2 = 400 GPH (trickle)
800 x 2 = 1,600 GPH (Niagara)
